On Linda Crannell's query about Census records:

Federal Census results from 1790 to 1970, extending down to the county
level, are available on-line at http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/census/.
Initial results are listed by state, but the site gives you the option
of choosing a particular state or states and then displaying the data by
county (by choosing that option at the bottom of the page).
