Actually, Fort Orange was only a small fort, and it was built in 1624.
It was not and never was a "village," unless this refers to the very small
community of a few private traders who were allowed to build their own
private houses within this small, crowded fort after the flood of 1648. What
happened in 1652 was the establishment of Beverwyck, not Fort Orange.
Beverwyck was a physically separate town laid out to the north of Fort Orange
and some distance from it. It was under the jurisdiction of Fort Orange.
Beverwyck became Albany in 1664.
