ALBANY, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 7, 1997  -  Columbia Executive IV Associates is commencing the archeological investigation at 102-110 State Street, the location of the proposed New York State Comptroller's office building. The office building site is on State Street two blocks east of the New York State Capitol. This block of Albany was located in the 1670s stockaded city. Land grants in this block of State Street were made to over a half dozen early Albany residents. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries famous local families such as the Wendells and Cornings owned residences at 102 and 110 State Street.

     Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc. has been selected to undertake the investigations. HAA, Inc., located in North Greenbush, has extensive experience with 17th, 18th, and 19th century archeological sites in urban settings. HAA provided services for other key developments in Albany such as the Civic Center (Pepsi Arena), Key Corp Plaza, Quackenbush Square, and the 80 State Street office building.

     The archeological study will be finished by the end of the month. A Phase 1A documentary overview has been completed and the scope for the archeological dig has been approved by Dr. Robert Kuhn, OPRHP. 

     Columbia Executive IV Associates, the City of Albany and the State of New York will be working with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on the investigation.

     The public will be informed of the results of the study.
