The New York State Archives holds no records (other than the State
Census for 1915 and 1925) that list residents of private charitable
institutions. The Census of Inmates in Almshouses and Poorhouses,
1875-1921(State Board of Charities, Series A1978) lists only residents of
public county or city institutions. Since the series is not indexed, in order
to locate the record of an individual one must know the location of the
poorhouse or almshouse and the exact date of residence.
