I'm looking for information on the history of toilets/water closets both
globally and the American contribution to their development. If anyone can
refer me to books, articles, web sites, museums on it I'd appreciate it.

My curiosity was first aroused when I saw an indoor flush toilet in Martin
Van Buren's home in Kinderhook a few years ago.
