I am trying to research the imprisonment of an Indian man (John Van
Gilder Sr.)
in Albany County jail November 1756. Most of the documentation right
now exists in
Sir William Johnson's papers. I went to the Albany County Hall of
Records to see if
they had anything on file. It seemed as though the Indian man was
languishing in jail,
and I wanted to see if it was because of the way criminals were treated
in that time period or because he was Indian. The Hall of Records is
missing the microfilm of the court records for that time period, and
there were two or three different kinds of
records.

I have two questions. 1.) Would there be original records somewhere
else?
2.) I can't find the list of records and the time periods that they
have right now. However, it seems to me the missing time periods
correspond with either the
beginning of the French and Indian War or the Revolutionary War and I
wondered
if this was significant.

Thanks very much for any help.
