War of 1812 and Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration
APHNYS Region 6 Conference - June 5-6, 2014
Registration is now open for the special one-day APHNYS Region 6
conference to be held in Plattsburgh on Friday June 6, 2014 (with early
arrival museum tour on Thursday evening June 5).
The conference focus is on the War of 1812,and specifically the Battle
of Plattsburgh of September, 1814. This Battle had a significant impact
on the outcome of the War of 1812 and future military strategy. The
bravery and cunning of the American forces, the early influence of New
York’s North Country and its people on the War and the young United
States of America will be examined. Learnhow the community has embraced
the annual commemoration of the Battle of Plattsburgh, and the
excitement about the 200th anniversary commemoration upcoming this Fall,
with international participation and events spanning three weeks. We
will share our experiences of how this sentinel event brings together
the community, historians, municipalities and visitors to gain a better
appreciation of the unique position this area holds in history.
Stay overnight before or after the conference and explore the
Plattsburgh area and the “Adirondack Coast”. A block of rooms has been
reserved at the conference headquarters hotel, the recently-renovated
Holiday Inn Plattsburgh conveniently located on Route 3 at Exit 37 off
the I-87 Northway. The discounted room rate is only $69.99 per night
(plus taxes/fees), by mentioning the APHNYS conference rate and
reserving by May 23, 2014 direct with the hotel.
For those arriving Thursday evening, the Welcome/ Registration Table
will be open from 5 to 8 pm Thursday with lots of information on the
conference and the area. A private, docent-guided tour of the War of
1812/Battle of Plattsburgh Museum will depart from the hotel Thursday at
6:45 pm (returning by 9 pm). Registration Friday is from 8 until
9:30am.
Conference day Friday includes engaging speakers describing the Battle
and its significance, the events leading up to the Battle, and the
contributions by and impact on the varied segments of the communities
and populace here in New York, in Vermont, and Canada. Explore on-site
exhibits and displays from local museums and organizations. Chat with
authors, musicians, and other experts on the War of 1812, the battles
here at Plattsburgh, and more. Lunch and break-time refreshments are
provided as part of the registration fee.
The presentations will begin at 9:30 am and conclude by 3:30 pm,
facilitating comfortable travel for those only able to spend the day
here in Plattsburgh.
We do encourage all to make it a weekend, as Museum Days are Saturday
and Sunday, June 7 and 8 from 10 am to 4 pm. All participating local
museums and venues offer free admission both days, with special programs
scheduled for the whole family. The First Weekend Plattsburgh group
sponsors special events on both Friday night and Saturday all day, and
the Breakfast Kiwanis Club offers Dozer Day at Airborne Speedway on
Saturday (admission charged).
And we promise – the snow will all be gone by June! Join us for an
