I would agree with another post and say that the listing was actually poormaster. 

If it were foremaster, it might have been someone who warned of stray golf shots, depending on when golfing was brought to America.

The word "foremaster" doesn't appear the the Oxford English Dictionary (the on-line version), nor in the Dict. of Americanisms on Historical Principles, publ. about 1948,and compiled by an editor of the OED (--- Mathews).
