The letters Walt Whitman wrote to parents and loved ones about the  
soldiers he helped look after, suggests another and informal way that  
news arrived at home. The surviving examples of these letters are  
tender and dignified—models of respect and sympathy.

Did the army or other services have in effect form letters for the  
use of officers? Be nice to know, if so.
