CURATING BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL EXHIBITS

A curator's workshop which will give participants basic skills in the
following aspects of researching and mounting an exhibit:  choosing an
historical or biographical theme, interpretation of materials, and
display options.

This workshop will use the work of Bard College's Dr. Christopher
Linder, at Hyde Park's Guinea Community - - thought to be a major stop
on the Underground Railroad - - as a hands-on example of how to develop
an exhibit, from planning to installation.

Participant will be introduced to the materials available through the
Dutchess County Historical Society Library and its Black History
Committee.

Presenters

Julia Hotton is an experienced museum professional, cultural historian
and visual arts specialist with an extensive background as an arts
administrator and exhibition curator.  Her combined skills in education
and cultural programming enhance her ability to organize and develop a
wide variety of programs.  She is a prominent figure in the cultural
community with easy access to its valuable resources and to a broad
array of artists, scholars, educators, business and social leaders.  Ms.
Hotton has curated and/or consulted for, among other organizations, The
New York Historical Society, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black
Culture, The Brooklyn Museum, The Mariner's Museum, Manhattan East
Gallery of Fine Arts, and Cinque Gallery.

Dr. Christopher Linder been a Visiting Professor of Anthropology and
Archaeologist-in-Residence at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New
York, since 1988.  His professional interests include geomorphological
impacts on archaeological sites; evolution of settlement, subsistence,
and ceremonial-isms; and the history of land use in the Hudson River
Basin.
