Oh Yes, still had one of these working in Saginaw Mich as late as 1939 - 1940

It was finally replaced by refrigeration produced ice plant

The walls were a foot or so think and insulated with cork to keep the ice
from melting.

Fire departments had to let them burn if they caught fire
