New York State Archives Partnership Trust
LARRY J. HACKMAN RESEARCH SEMINAR
FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT HISTORIANS

Attention Local Government Historians:

The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust are now accepting applications for a pilot program in support of local government historians. The Larry J. Hackman Research Seminar for Local Historians provides financial support for a limited number of officially appointed local government historians (including town, village, county, city, borough and Borough of Manhattan community historians) to visit the Archives' newly renovated research facility on the 11th floor of the Cultural Education Center, Albany, New York, for a three-day research seminar, September 14-16, 2005. The seminar is an opportunity for local historians to learn about and use resources in the State Archives to benefit their community history research.

For information about records in the Archives, consult our website at www.archives.nysed.gov (online catalog "Excelsior" and other guides), or contact the archivist on duty by phone at 518-474-8955, or by e-mail [log in to unmask]

The first half-day of the seminar will highlight use of original and microfilmed records at the Archives, emphasizing how state government records can aid community history research. During the following two days, archivists will assist participants with hands-on research work.

Elements of the half-day training will include:
· Overview of the State Archives (especially the archival holdings and orientation to the new reading room)
· Searching the online catalog "Excelsior" to find records held by the State Archives (and other online services)
· Using Archives finding aids, online databases, microforms and reader-printers
· Ordering photocopies or interlibrary loan microforms.

Funding covers reimbursement of travel and meal expenses at allowable State rates. Two-nights' lodging (September 14-15) at a local hotel will be provided at no cost to you, as well as a credit for up to $20.00 for onsite photocopy costs.

Eligibility guidelines and the application form are available at the Archives Partnership Trust website http://www.nysarchivestrust.org/apt/hackman/ For the 2005 pilot Seminar, the number of competitive awards will be limited-so complete the one-page application form today!

Applications must be sent by U.S. Mail (postmarked by July 1, 2005) to:
