Any military uniform or button experts out there? When was the design of
button used in the Civil War by NY troops adopted. This is the design of
an eagle on globe, on a shield with the US and NY arms, with thirteen
stars above, and Excellsior below.

The question arises from a person who found one of this design in an 1851
site in Pennsylvania (could be a later intrusion) and wants to know when
the design was first used.

    Thanks for the reply. The button was found at the site of what is
known as the Christiana Riot at Christiana, Lancaster Co., Pa. The event
occured Sep 11, 1851. We can think of no reason for a  NY button to be
there other than on a jacket brought back as a souvenir after the
war.There appears to be hints of a backmark but the button is fairly
worn. I'll let you know if I can decipher the mark.
