The 16" coast defense battery erected during the inter-war period and
located just west of Montauk Point, Suffolk County, Long Island, was
named Camp Hero, unusual name for a military installation.
It has been suggested that the name may relate to Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough
Riders" who were quaranteened at Camp Wycoff nearby after their
return to the US from Cuba in 1898.
Does any reader have any advise on the origin of the name Camp Hero?
