The word "canopy" comes from the Latin "canopus" which means mosquito.
From Roman times forth those who were privileged in public and private to
protection from those pesky critters have resorted to a "canopy" which is a
tented mosquito net, ornate, ceremonial or otherwise.
The merchant purveyor who proffered the mosquito canopies was quite in
order to describe his netted enclosure thus. However, were he more of a
Latin scholar he could have dropped the mosquito and argued that the
canopy was sufficient...
