French's life is described briefly in the work:

In Memoriam, John Homer French, LL.D.
Born July 7, 1824, Died December 23, 1888, compiled by Mary Elizabeth Washburn French, 82 pp.

The work is in the State Library.

In addition to being a great mapmaker and gazeteer maker, he was also a mathematician and wrote basic mathematics books and a teacher of mathematics.

If you want to see the book, you will have to visit the library; it's a fragile book.

I'm hoping someone can tell me a little about the life, history, and family
of John Homer French (1824-1888) who compiled the 1860 Gazeteer of the
State of New York. I'm particularly interested in parentage, where did he
live at various times in his life, what else did he do (can't be just this
one monumental work!), family, etc.
