The 69th Regiment, New York National Guard, organized in 1851, is one of the most famous units in the state's military history. For generations this New York City regiment was predominantly Irish; its insignia displays an Irish harp, and its mascots are Irish wolfounds. The 69th "Fighting Irish" Regiment distinguished itself in combat in numerous engagements, from Bull Run through Okinawa.
A fine exhibit of prints, photographs, uniforms, documents, and memorabilia of the 69th is presented at the New York State Vietnam Memorial Fine Arts Gallery, Empire State Plaza, Justice Building, Albany. The exhibit is open to the public 9-5, Mon.-Fri., through May 1, 1998. Parking is available on the underground "P" levels in the Plaza, or (with quite a bit of luck) on State Street near the entrance to the Justice Building.
