All of those interested in the famous Chester Gillette murder trial of
1906, and its later fictional adaptations as Theodore Dreiser's novel "An
American Tragedy," the classic film "A Place in the Sun" and the
Metropolitan Opera's "An American Tragedy," are invited to attend a
special anniversary conference for the public and scholars to take place
at Herkimer County Community College on June 22-24, 2006. The conference,
Chester, Grace and Dreiser: the Birth of An American Tragedy, will bring
together historical, literary and legal experts from across the United
States to discuss one of New York State's most notable crimes of the early
twentieth century. There is a fee for conference attendees. For more
