LARRY J. HACKMAN RESEARCH SEMINAR
FOR PUBLIC HISTORIANS
AT NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES
SEPT. 13-15, 2006

Attention Public Historians:

The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust are now
accepting applications for the second annual Larry J. Hackman Research
Seminar for Public Historians. The Research Seminar allows officially
appointed public historians (including town, village, county, city,
borough and Manhattan Borough community historians) an opportunity to
visit the Archives' research facility in Albany, New York for a
three-day seminar to learn about resources to benefit their local
history research. The Seminar will be held on September 13-15, 2006.

On the first day, a seminar will highlight use of original records at
the Archives, emphasizing how state government records can aid community
history research. During the following two days, archivists will assist
participants with hands-on research work.

Elements of the seminar will include:

* Overview of the State Archives (especially the scope of archival
holdings and an orientation to the reading room)
* Searching the online catalog "Excelsior" to find records held by the
State Archives (and other online services)
* Using Archives finding aids, online databases, microforms and
reader-printers
* Ordering photocopies or interlibrary loan microforms.

Funding covers reimbursement of travel and meal expenses for allowable
State rates. Three nights' lodging at a local hotel will be provided at
no cost to you, as well as a credit for up to $50.00 for onsite
photocopy costs.

Eligibility guidelines and applications are available at the Archives
Partnership Trust website: http://www.nysarchivestrust.org.

For the 2006 Seminar, the number of competitive awards will be limited,
so complete the one-page application form today! The application form is
available at

Applications are accepted by regular U.S. Mail only, to be postmarked
by July 3, 2006. The Seminar will be held September 13-15, 2006
