People interested in a thorough study of the slavery and emancipation issues
in New York State should take a look at "A History of Negro Slavery in New
York", by Edgar J. McManus (Syracuse University Press, 1966).  This book is
probably out of print but is almost certainly available in most college and
university libraries.
