Sarah,
The other answers are correct as far as they go. The first thing you need
to answer is what style is required by your publisher/teacher. At this
point all style manuals have been updated to deal with web citations.
Basically they say to give the URL and the date you viewed the page. You
should probably print the pages you are citing for future reference in
case the page changes or goes away. The APA (American Psychological
Assoc.) manual is online and gives good examples of there style, which
tends to be simpler, more streamlined than MLA or Chicago (Turabian). To
get all of them, visit the Reference section of a local academic (college)
library and look at them side by side in hard copy.

Thus there are no guidelines for web usage. The author cited the home page for the LOC as the reference, but was actually using the George Washington Papers and other Revolutionary War Journals citing, e.g., three years in one fell swoop with no other specifics. The Library of Congress items were interpreted and transcribed--two words which put the fear of God into my head, because I have found so many mistakes in so many transcriptions, let along "interpretations." The information used I recognized as having read elsewhere, but I do not know how "selective" the process is. Any authorities or suggestions out there? Tanx.
