In celebration of "November Is New York State History Month," the New York State Library's Manuscripts and Special Collections unit presents "The Erie Canal, New York State, and the United States,"

The Erie Canal-related images at this site were created from original documents and books in the collections of the New York State Library (unless otherwise noted). The images are 400 dpi PDFs. To open the PDF, click on the link under the image or in the citation column. Each image can be used as a stand-alone document to teach students how to analyze primary and secondary documents or groups of documents can be used as a teaching unit on some aspect of the history of the canal and New York State, including the canal as the "mother of cities"; the role of the canal in immigration history; what it was like to live/work on or near the canal, etc.
