Several groups referred to themselves as the Christian Church. [If I'm
not mistaken, even the very early Mormons used this appellation before
changing their name.] Because of the nature of their beliefs, some of
these congregations seem to have been only loosely connected with each
other. Outsiders frequently called them the Smithites or the
Campbellites, I believe. [The Smith referred to was not Joseph. However,
Campbell did have early connection with Smith.]

I believe that the Disciples of Christ adhere to the traditions of these
"primitive Christians". Some scholarly work has been done on the history
of this group. For several reasons, unfortunately, it seems unlikely
that many church records have survived.
