Syracuse University Press will publish an Encyclopedia of New York State in
the fall of 2002. The Encyclopedia will be a single volume of about 1300
pages and 3800 entries, as well as an electronic edition. At that time, you
will be able to look in the index under any of the "extinct" counties of New
York such as Deale County, New Castle County, Upland County, St. Jones
County, Cornwall County, Duke's County, Cumberland County, Gloucester
County, Yorkshire County, Charlotte County, or Tryon County (now Montgomery
County, but important enough to have its own entry under its old name) and
find the appropriate entry. In the meantime you could find information in
_New York Atlas of Historical County Boundaries_. John H. Long, Editor;
compiled by Kathryn Ford Thorne. (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1993).
