Some examples would be

The .75 caliber Short Land Service Musket (New Pattern) aka the Brown Bess
which was the British Army (and thus colonial militia) standard long arm
from the French & Indian War throught the American Revolution.

The .69 Caliber Charleville Musket was the standard French long arm and
was used by US and French Forces in the Asmerican Revolution. It became
the basis for the US Springfield musket of 1795 which was the standard long
arm for US forces in the War of 1812.

There could also be any of a large number of civilian hunting muskets in
.45 caliber through .60 caliber. Also fowling pieces (shotgun muskets)
could be found.

Subject: firearm question for 1800 - 1820

Would anyone be able to tell me what type of firearm might be typically
found on an upstate NY family farm around 1800 - 1810? I'm assuming most
such farming households would have included some sort of guns.

Thank you for your assistance,
Susan D. Wagenheim, MD
