For a paper I'm writing, I'm looking for primary source material
concerning the lives of African Americans in upstate New York, both as
slaves and as freedmen/women, or any status that fell in between, from
colonial times to just before the Civil War.

I'm most interested in Schenectady and Schenectady County, but I'm
considering expanding the scope to include the larger Capital District
area and Hudson Valley and would welcome advice about resources in these
areas as well.

I intend to investigate the holdings at the Schenectady Historical
Society and the NYS Library and archives, but if anyone knows of some
particular rich source of material, or an especially useful book on this
subject, I'd appreciate the guidance.

You may respond off list at: [log in to unmask]

Thanks.
