Land once cleared for agricultural use becomes abandoned in modern times for agricultural use and reverts to forest. Farmers on small farms cannot compete or afford the mechanization that is required in order to operate on small margins, or for that matter, pay a living wage to the hired hand. Tragically, you will find that many farmers don't even qualify for social security, because they have never shown a profit on their farms, and thus never had any funds paid into the Social Security System.
