Hi,
Is it possible that the battle referred to on the Ottawa plaque is the
one
at Queenston Heights, which is near Hamilton, Ontario?
The American invasion attempt was a classic military blunder, one
which
had little prospect of long term value if it had succeeded and which was
doomed from the start by inadequate preparation. There were not enough
boats for the size of the force to be carried across the Niagara River.
The
boats had to be manned by soldiers who were not experienced river men.
The New York Militia troops involved refused to leave the country, so
only the
force of US regular army troops went over and they were eventually
greatly
out-manned and captured.
This was not an expedition which brought credit to its organizers.

  Regards,
  Homer
