There is, I beleive, a highway marker along the shore of Lake Champlain opposite Valcour Island a few miles south of Plattsburgh commemorating the Battle of Valcour. For those not familiar with this battle, Benedict Arnold built a small fleet at the south end of the lake, sailed north, hid behind valcour Island until the larger British fleet sailed by, then engaged them. Although he lost the battle and barely escaped himself, he inflicted enough damage on the British that they turned around and returned to the north end of the lake where they stayed until the next year giving the Patriots a year to organize themselves, gain experience and numbers, and generally prepare themselves for Saratoga. So if Saratoga was the turning point of the Revolution, then Valcour and Benedict Arnold were the key to Saratoga. ************************************************************************** Wayne L.
