I was down in Elmira on Saturday and went to see the marker at the site of the Civil War Prison Camp. The marker is very easy to find -- near the corner of Winsor and Hoffman Sts. on Elmira's westside. The marker sits in the front yard of an Elmira Water Authority building and it is a peaceful setting. (Actually a residential neighborhood.) A plaque, as shown on the web site, is there as well as a "display" with text about the site, a map, etc. Information is there about Mr. John W. Jones, a former slave who ensured that the graves of Civil War soldiers were marked. Mr. Jones died in 1900. Jones Court, an apartment complex, was named after him. (There is also a picture of him.) The text also talks about the other locations in Elmira of Civil War camps. It also mentions two other boundary markers for the Prison located on Water St. Three flags fly on the site -- American, Confederate...and ???? It's yellow...since I'm not a native New Yorker, I'm not sure what state flag looks like. Thanks to the list for making me aware of this site. Although I lived in the Elmira-Corning area in 1992, I don't remember the dedication of the memorial. Nice to finally catch up with history!
