Look in the HISTORICAL ATLAS OF NEW YORK STATE (Rochester:  Wm. P. Munger, 1941), a large oversize volume.  On p. 9 is a map in color, "The Counties as Developed by the English in 1770."  It shows Tryon, Charlotte, Gloucester, Cumberland, Albany, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester and the NYC and LI counties.  Also on the same page is a map of the land grant to the Duke of York, and the counties of the state in 1810.

A NYS history question from a friend sparked the repeat-need
to identify a GOOD REFERENCE BOOK about NYS history.  I'm still
trying to locate such a book with acceptable NYS detail for his
