Many of = you will recall the street that ran around that park, in front of the D&H = building. Years ago, when SUNY took over the building, the street was removed and = the park was extended right up to the building front. Several historic = markers that used to stand along the street were removed.=20 One of these was the "Fort Orange" marker, which had the following text: "FORT ORANGE Site of West India Company Colony 1624. Here was born Sarah = Rapelje, first white child in N.Y. State, 1625. Fort stood S.E. by the = river." Some years ago there was an email discussion about these markers. If was = found that most of them that were removed were placed in storage here in = the State Museum. I believe that at that time that this one was found to = be missing, and it still is. This week two descendants of the Rapalje family on the very same day sent = letters about this marker - one from Glen Cove, NY and one from Bellflower,= IL. The one from Bellflower wanted a picture of the sign; the one from = Glen Cove supplied a picture of the sign and wanted it restored to its = original location. Happy coincidence on the picture, anyway. Does anyone have any further recollection of this marker or know what = might have heppend to it?
