A.C. Wilcox & Co. were private bankers in New York City which around the turn of the century opened branch banks in twenty small towns upstate. The firm failed in May 1905. Source of this information is William H. Dillistin, comp., Historical Directory of the Banks of the State of New York (New York: New York State Bankers Assoc., 1946). The New York State Archives holds incorporation ("charter") files for defunct state banking organizations in New York State, ca. 1838-1967. These files include lists of incorporators, by-laws, etc., for commercial banks, savings and loan associations, etc., but not for private bankers like the Wilcox chain. There is an index to the files, and photocopies of the documents in the files are available, if the condition of the documents permits copying. The inactive banking institution files are a useful source for community financial history, and we'd like to see more use of them.
