A few additions: 1895 May 10: Construction begins on the Buffalo & Niagara Falls Electric Railway to run an interurban trolley line between the cities in its name. September 20: The Buffalo & Niagara Falls Electric Railway commences direct interurban trolley service between the cities in its name. 1896 August 8: Lewiston & Youngstown Frontier Railway opens an interurban trolley line between the two towns in its name. Later extends a short distance into Fort Niagara. 1897 April 9: Ground broken for the Lower Steel Arch Bridge across the Niagara River at Niagara Falls, carrying both road and rail traffic. Replaces the Lower Suspension Bridge and is built up and around the old bridge. August 27: The Lower Steel Arch Bridge at Niagara Falls is completed in record time for so big a job. (Bridge celebrates is centennial next month.) September 23: Work begins on the Upper Steel Arch Bridge across the Niagara River at Niagara Falls to replace the Upper Suspension Bridge. (Also called the Falls View Bridge due to its location within easy site of the falls.) 1898 June 30: Upper Steel Arch Bridge at Niagara Falls is completed and open to traffic. Carries a double track trolley line to provide for international service between the United States and Canada. Car Number 19 of the Niagara Falls Park & River Railway becomes the first trolley to cross the bridge. 1899 July 21: Lewiston-Queenston Suspension Bridge across the Niagara River below Niagara Falls is opened. Uses the former Upper Suspension Bridge from Niagara Falls. Carries a single track trolley line allowing for the creation of the Great Gorge Route, a world-famous international belt line. From the terminal in Niagara Falls, New York, trolleys would take passengers across the Upper Steel Arch Bridge to the edge of Horseshoe Falls and then back along the upper edge of the Niagara Gorge, down the Niagara Escarpment at Queenston, across the Lewiston-Queenston Suspension Bridge, through the bottom of the Niagara Gorge and then back up to the terminal at Niagara Falls.
