THE ETHNIC EXPERIENCE IN THE CITY 1997 Summer Institute American University July 19-25, 1997 As long as the population of the United States has been nourished by immigration, the city of New York has been the gateway to a new life for migrants, voluntary and involuntary, and refugees. In the streets of New York, Irish, Italian, Chinese, Eastern European, Latino, and Caribbean newcomers found their first residences, first jobs, first brush with anti-foreign prejudice. After Reconstruction, the descendants of former Southern slaves migrated to New York to escape Jim Crow and sharecropping. "Ethnic Experience in the City" is designed to explore this hidden history of New York City. Professors Alan Kraut of the Department of History and Ed Smith of the Program in American Studies will lead participants in "The Ethnic Experience in the City" as they use three New York neighborhoods -- the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Harlem, and Spanish Harlem -- as laboratories to study the urban ethnic experience over the past two centuries. Through lectures, walking tours, and ethnic restaurants, students will sample the rich blend of cultures, ethnicities, and religions of New York and some of its boroughs. Participants will spend a week in New York attending lectures at the Museum of the City of New York and touring ethnic neighborhoods, following the footprints of various immigrant groups. Special assistance will be available for those who wish to learn how to trace their family roots. Those taking the course for credit will spend the rest of the summer working on individual research projects. The cost is $2,252.00 for undergraduate credit and $2,381.00 for graduate credit. Students interested in the non-credit option will pay $1200. This price includes a welcoming banquet, five box lunches, four dinners in ethnic restaurants, and all transportation to and admission fees for cultural and historical sites in New York City. Deadline for registration is June 13.
