SARATOGA SPRINGS — Peter Hammell should have no trouble keeping busy
for the next few months, maybe years.

The Adirondack Trust Co. archivist recently began sorting through
nearly 25,000 documents that had been hidden away for more than 100
years in the dropped ceiling in the Saratoga Springs Finance
Department in City Hall.

The collection also includes 150 old stenographer’s books tied with
string. The only trouble is that shorthand was done in the Pitman
system, which is no longer used, Hammell said, so he has to find
someone, or some way, to interpret what the books say.

Boxes contain thousands of letters to Brackett from legal clients,
which could provide fascinating insights into high-profile cases from
that era. The documents cover a period from about 1897 to 1910-11.
