Amsterdam is getting things right esp. Mayor Thane (who was the Director of the Elwood Museum, previous to her being mayor).

I have spoken to Robert and congratulate him on the new position!

Historian tapped for new post

By Rebecca Webster, Recorder News Staff

Amsterdam City Historian Robert von Hasseln has been named as the new
director of community and economic development for the city.

At a Common Council meeting Tuesday, a resolution was added to the
agenda to approve his appointment.

Prior to their vote, some of council members wanted to say a few
things about the process and how happy they were with the decision.

One of those was Fourth Ward Alderman David Dybas.

"Mr. von Hasseln was one of the choices that we passed to you (Mayor
Ann Thane)," he said. "Speaking from myself, I think it was a very
good choice."

Though von Hasseln could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening,
1st Ward Alderman Joseph Isabel said at the meeting that von Hasseln
said during his interview with the council that he would maintain his
position as the city historian but relinquish his historian salary, as
well as all or a portion of health insurance back to the city.

After the meeting, Mayor Ann Thane said she was delighted with the appointment.

"I'm relieved that the interview process is over and that the council
agreed with the decision. We have co-ownership in that," she said. "I
think that Robert is a great choice."

Thane said very talented individuals applied for the position and it
was a difficult decision, but she thinks the city will be "very
well-served" by this appointment.

"He has already shown that he promotes our community effectively," she
said, not only with the events that he's promoted, but with the
Veterans Commission, the printed materials he has produced, the
historic tours he has developed throughout the city, and many others.

"That was what he did working part time, one day a week," she said. "I
can only imagine what he'll do given 40 hours. We're thrilled."
