Groundbreaking Conference About The History of Staten Island, New York "Staten Island, New York, in American History and 21st Century Education" College of Staten Island (CUNY), Center for the Arts March 19-20, 2011 Teachers, curators, librarians, scholars, historians, students, and the general public are invited to enjoy a two-day event with over 80 presentations, including panels on various themes from Dutch colonial architecture to contemporary politics, from war memorials to the history of local parks, including the 10th anniversary of the closing of Fresh Kills. Other special panels include archeology, archives and museum studies, transportation history, immigration, pedagogy, Jewish and Catholic history, the American Revolution, 19th century reform movements, the civil rights movement, and LGBTQ history, among others. Our keynotes are Ms. Carmen Farina, former Deputy Chancellor of NYC Public Schools who will speak on Saturday March 19 to the topic "Making Connections: Social Studies as a Vehicle for Understanding Ourselves and the World" and the preeminent historian of New York City Dr. Kenneth T. Jackson of Columbia University who will speak on Sunday March 20 to the topic "Emerging from the Shadow: Staten Island and the Challenge of the 21st Century." The plenary session for the conference will feature a round table chaired by New York State Historian Robert Weible and featuring the five New York City Borough Historians discussing "1898: New York City's Consolidation and its Ramifications." There will also be a book exhibit with seventeen publishers displaying their titles.
