Posted at request of the NYS French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission. --Moderator, NYHIST-L * * * * * * * * Consultant Position - Online Content Editor/Producer for New York State French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission The French and Indian War, fought from 1754 to 1763, was the precursor to the fight for American Independence. This conflict, now gaining recognition for its important role in shaping this country and Canada, was a fierce contest between the British and American colonists against the French and Canadians, with Native American allies on both sides. The strategic waterways in New York-the Hudson-Champlain corridor, the Mohawk Valley, and the St. Lawrence-made the state a focal point of the war. As a result, the New York State French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission was established by State to raise awareness of this significant and fascinating period of American history. The Commission is responsible for organizing and implementing a series of French and Indian War reenactment events to promote tourism in New York State: Fort William Henry/Lake George in 2007; Fort Carillon/Ticonderoga in 2008; Fort Niagara in 2009; and concluding with Fort La Presentation/Fort Levis in 2010. Content Editor/Producer Job Description: The Content Editor/Producer will be responsible for the writing and editing of content for the web site - fiw250.iloveny.com. The producer should have a thorough understanding of the French and Indian War history and tourism. The producer will help select and work with information providers, historic sites, and the staff at I Love NY. The assignment is approximately 5 months (about 135 hours) and is available immediately. The preferred candidate will be able to work from home with love of this history, tourism and strong writing skills. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: * Acts as Web editor managing the day-to-day content management of web site * Responsible for feature writing, article editing, maintaining general content, proofing, and light coding for site * Organizes internal design, development and production resources to create and maintain a world-class tourism web site * Produce new features from concept to execution including original content * Works with multi-disciplinary team to develop and maintain long term design, content and promotion strategies of web site * Ensures that all content remains up-to-date and that Web activities are coordinated with all other offline activities * Provide computer equipment, internet access and phone. Qualifications: * An eye for what it takes to build a community online, develop content and help manage a channel dedicated to people and communities. * Experience in managing content editing, design and development process for web site creation * Degree or experience in history, tourism, journalism or communications * In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word and email. * Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills * Ability to work effectively and professionally as part of a diverse team * Initiative to take ownership over a project * Detail-oriented * Strong interest in heritage tourism, and enthusiasm for online media * Able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously under deadline pressure Compensation: Based on experience and salary history this is a contract position. It is estimated that the position will pay no more than $30 per hour without benefits and the consultant is expected to provide computer, internet and telephone access.
