A few years ago I found the book
mentioned below at the local "Friends of the Library" used book sale. You might
ask your public library to try to get it on ILL.
"The Sky is Falling" by Arthur
Weingarten [Grosset & Dunlap: 1977]. It's a bit over 200 pages long and has
a section of photos of the people involved in the 28 July 1945 crash into the
Empire State Building and some of the crash.
According to the book jacket 10 people
in the Empire State Building & 3 people in the airplane were killed in the
crash. The plane was an Army B-25 bomber. According to the map, the plane left
Bedford Army Airfield, Bedford, Massachusetts, heading for Newark Field, Newark,
New Jersey. The plane flew over Worcester, Mass.; Hartford, Meridan, and New
Haven, Connecticut; then along the Connecticut shore of Long Island Sound;
crossed the Sound to Glen Cove, L. I. and flew along the North Shore of Nassau
County and Queens before flying, lost in the fog, over Manhattan and crashing
into the side of the Empire State Building.
There are photos of the Empire State
Building on fire - 78th & 79th floors and of the damage done by the crash. Since this book isn't all
that old, you might have some luck getting it via ILL.

Subject: [NYHIST-L] Empire State
Building
Does anyone know where I can get Pics of the NY skyline 1945? Also
I would like some info on the plane that crashed into the Empire State
Building, I've found some stuff but very little. Were there any movies
or books on the subject that I can locate?
Thanks.
