Associate Director for Interpretation

The Farmers’ Museum

Cooperstown, New York

 

 

The Farmers’ Museum seeks an innovative and creative museum professional to lead its interpretive programs during a time of growth and renewal.  The Farmers’ Museum is one of America’s premier regional history museums, with a long-term commitment to creating quality experiences for its visitors. Presently, the museum is completing installation of a new attraction, “The Empire State Carousel” which represents the depth and breadth of New York state history through carousel animals and carved panels created by over 1,000 volunteers. The museum is also renowned for its ongoing craft programs, growing agricultural programs and its participation in the Cooperstown Graduate Program, a leading training program for museum professionals. The successful candidate will work with the senior administrative team to develop, implement and evaluate innovative programs as part of the museum’s master planning effort.

Position Responsibilities:

ˇ        Manage staff of seven supervisors and forty-five part-time and seasonal interpreters.

ˇ        Coordinate interpretive programming with school programs, special events and curatorial staff.

ˇ        Collaborate on program development with neighboring cultural institutions.

ˇ        Oversee budget for interpretation, agricultural and crafts areas.

ˇ        Provide leadership in interpretive programming and assist the Vice President for Education in setting departmental goals and objectives.

ˇ        Teach graduate students and coordinate internships through the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

ˇ        Participate in interdepartmental project teams.


The successful applicant should have five years of experience in developing and implementing successful museum education programs with significant managerial responsibilities. Master’s degree in Museum Studies, History or allied field required. Candidate must be able to demonstrate effective organizational, oral and written communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. Position open until filled.
