The following conference announcement is posted by request of the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society. Moderator, NYHIST-L "NEW YORKERS AND THE MILITARY" Saratoga Springs, NY, November 10-12, 2005 The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society presents a conference for historians and genealogists: November 10-12 (Thursday evening, Friday & Saturday) - Armed conflicts have been a part of American history since colonial times, and almost every American genealogist has ancestors or relatives whose lives were affected by one or more of these conflicts. At our forthcoming conference, "New Yorkers and the Military," top genealogists, historians, and archivists will share with you their expertise about this aspect of American history. The conference will cover conflicts from the French & Indian War and American Revolution through World War I (as well as the draft in World War II). A goal of the conference is to make genealogists, historians, and archivists more aware of the value of each others' work. Some speakers will explain how to find and use records of military service at the national, state, and local levels, while others will focus on the historical context in which these records should be viewed. There will be presentations on the experience of the ordinary soldier or sailor in the different wars, as well on specialized topics such as the role of the Iroquois of New York in the Civil War, the experience of pacifists in World War I, and medical records from the Civil War. Make plans now to attend this conference, which promises to be both educational and enjoyable. The location will be the beautiful Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The program will include five social events, the highlight being the conference banquet, at which our speaker will be Allen Weinstein, Archivist of the United States (head of the National Archives). Registration fee (two days) $125; all meals extra. Please visit the NYG&B website at www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org <http://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/> for details.
