Call for Papers for 4th Annual Historic Sullivan Preservation
Conference
Historic Sullivan, the Preservation Society of Sullivan County,
New York, has announced that it will sponsor its
4th Annual Preservation Conference at the Liberty
Museum & Arts Center on Main Street in Liberty on Saturday, May
7th. The theme of this year’s conference is
The Woodstock Music Festival: How It Came to Sullivan County
and its Effect on the Area.
ArialConference organizers are
seeking presenters (historians, artists, archivists, folklorists and
others) whose work explores the groundbreaking 1969 event in Bethel,
just down the road from Liberty. Session topics may include, but
are not limited to the economic aspects of the festival, the effects
of the festival on popular culture, a behind the scenes look at
festival organizing, and how festivals such as Woodstock can change
local communities.
We are particularly interested in presenting the work of young
scholars and of scholars with a commitment to engaging public
audiences. Arial All proposals must be
received electronically by April 1. Successful proposal submissions
will be notified no later than April 15. A proposal should be an
abstract of 200 words plus contact information and biographical
materials on the presenter. Papers will be no more than thirty
minutes in length.
Other features of the conference include a roundtable discussion from
those who attended the 1969 Festival and a keynote address by Elliot
Tiber, the former president of the White Lake/Bethel Chamber of
Commerce and owner of the El Monaco Hotel, who was instrumental in
bringing the festival to its Bethel location. He is the author of
the new book, Woodstock Delirium: Music, Mayhem & Madness.
ArialThe mission of Historic Sullivan is to
"produce and provide quality educational programs based on its
knowledge and expertise in the preservation and restoration of
history, buildings, spaces and culture. It will strongly support
local preservation efforts and provide leadership in linking historic
preservation and the protection of historic landscapes." For more
information, see www.historicsullivan.org.
For this conference, they are partnered with the Liberty Museum and
Arts Center, a local history organization whose mission includes a
substantial commitment to the 20th century history of the Catskills.
Award-winning exhibitions have included ones on Catskills Main Streets
and New York's Route 17.
