CALL FOR PAPERS -- A reminder! Proposals for Researching New York 2004 are due Monday August 2, 2004. See details of the call for papers below. CONFERENCE UPDATE -- Planning is well underway and 2 special events are already scheduled: "The FBI in Action: Recreating an Original 1940's Radio Drama" For many years, radio station WGY in Schenectady New York -- one of the first radio stations in the U .S. -- produced radio program, "The FBI in Action." Working with one of the original scripts, we will present a production of this radio broadcast complete with original sound effects created by the women who created them in the 1940s. "A Musical History: Stephen Van Rensselaer and The Albany Euterpian Club 1823-27" The Euterpian Club was founded in 1823 by a group of young men, extremely serious in their intent; they were amateur musicians who organized concerts, commissioned musical arrangements, and collaborated with some of the outstanding musicians of the day. They included members of the Pruyn, Van Rensselaer, Van Schaick and Van Vechten families, as well as Simeon DeWitt (New York State's Surveyor General) and Edmund Genet (Citizen Genet). The scattered sources of their book of minutes, Lansing Pruyn's musical manuscript book, and a few newspaper advertisements provide a wonderful view of these men who would become leading citizens of New York. Following the presentation The Musicians of Ma'alwyck with soprano Gene Marie Callahan Kern, from Chicago Lyric Opera; Sten Yngvar Isachsen, guitar; and Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, violin will present a concert of materials drawn from the musical manuscripts. ________________________________________________ RESEARCHING NEW YORK 2004: Perspectives on Empire State History The organizers of the 6th Annual Researching New York Conference invite proposals for papers, panels, workshops, roundtables, exhibits, and media or multi-media presentations on all aspects of the history of New York State--from early settlement to the present.
