Hello: A specialized area of New York State history is POSTAL HISTORY, the study of the post offices, mail routes, etc in New York State. The Empire State Postal History Society has a website dedicated to this area. It can be found at http://www.esphs.org . Every month we have 4 interesting items from NYS postal history. This month (May 2004), we have 18th Century items from Canajoharie, Geneva and Steuben. The Steuben item is interesting because the post office only existed for about 5 months before its name was changed to Rome. We believe it was the first discontinued post office in NYS under the Federal postal sysem. The ESPHS was founded in 1967 and currently has about 200 members scattered throughout the state.
