"Institutions of Education And Mercy"- the legacy of Albany Bishop William Doane The consecration of William Croswell Doane as Albany's first Episcopal bishop in 1869 initiated a period that saw the establishment and growth of several Albany institutions including the magnificent Cathedral of All Saints. Researcher Dr. Ann Ottesen used NYS Library materials to delve into the life of this churchman, confidant of several important figures of his day, and credited with the establishment of St. Agnes school, Childs Hospital and St. Margarets House for Babies. The members of the Sisterhood of the Holy Child Jesus provided the labor and supervision for these institutions, and offered one of the earliest professional training schools for women as nurses and 'baby minders'.
