How about this one....Dr. Phebe Oliver Briggs. Early female doctor attended
college in Philadelphia. She and her classmates were insulted and even stoned
on the way to class. After graduation she worked for the Quakers in their
effort to run some of the Department of Indian Affairs. She went west to work
with the Otoe Indians, took part in a buffalo hunt, survived an attack by the
Sioux, kind of a funny story in a way. When she was married many who "signed"
the marriage document were Native Americans. She was born in South Dansville,
New York.
