The custom of burying the women on the left goes back a lot longer than which
arm they held as they walked down the aisle at a wedding. Church weddings did
not become "popular" until the late 1800s here in Hurley. The vast majority
for "outsiders" married by the local minister were conducted in the
parsonage. All the local ceremonies were conducted in the home of the bride;
and occasionally the home of the groom. For those that were not church
oriented, there was always the local Justice who would marry them.
