I am having a problem identifying the correct time when Jacob Leisler took control of New York City in 1689. Was it in March, April, or May? According to research, he took control of south New York in March? If so, did that comprise more than just the city? and where was Fort James? He sent out a broadside in April claiming that Forts James and Orange were about to fall and called for help from outlying areas. The three towns on the east end of Long Island responded first by issuing a declaration on May 8;then, on May 10, dispatching representatives to Jamaica where they heard from Lt. Governor Nicholson (Lt. G. of the Dominion of New England, not just of New York) that the broadside was a lie and that Leisler had been guilty of several other deceits. Or, was it not until May 31 when, supported by the militia, he demanded the keys to the fort? What might be the difference between his supposed taking of south New York in April and demanding the keys to F ort James on May 31? Have I made any sense? Thanks. Nancy Hyden Woodward
