Stokes' Iconography of Manhattan Island, p. 1623, col. 1, quotes an interesting passage describing a visit to New York City in May, 1822, from the diary of a teenager from Philadelphia named Ellwood Walter. At the time that Stokes was published, the manuscript of the diary was in the hands of a descendant. Does anyone know where it is now? Young Walter was no doubt the son of Ellwood Walter, a Philadelphia bookseller. GAT George A. Thompson Author of A Documentary History of "The African Theatre", Northwestern Univ. Pr., 1998.
